Thomas and Ann Guthrie
Obituary - Thomas Guthrie
It is my painful duty to record the death of one of the oldest pioneers of settlement on the East Coast--Mr Thomas Guthrie--who for many years resided at Castle Point, and was well-known to every traveller on the Coast for his kindness and hospitality, and those settlers who followed him will not fail to remember the neighbourly assistance and friendly help rendered them.
Castle Point was the Port where the inland and many of the Coast settlers had to land their goods, and his house was always open to them. Not one of the settlers in the district [beyond] has good reason to be thankful for his generous helping hand.
Mr Guthrie was a native of the isle of Wight, and arrived by the ship Adelaide in 1840.
For some time past he has been suffering from heart disease, which terminated fatally on Saturday night last, May 27, 1876, in his 63rd year.
His remains were interred yesterday (Tuesday) in the cemetery at Castle Point, and was followed from his late residence at Whakataki by a very numerous cavalcade, mostly of old friends.
The funeral service was performed by the Rev Mr Teackle from Masterton.
Thomas Guthrie was born on the Isle of Wight in 1814, the son of Thomas Guthrie and Ann Sturtridge.
