Tinui Mission District AGM,
29 April 1902

Annual General Meeting of the Whareama and East Coast Mission District, 29 April 1902

The annual meeting of parishioners of the Te Nui Anglican Church was held in the Public Hall on Tuesday evening, April 29th. The Rev. J.H. Sykes, Vicar, presided. There was only a small attendance.

The Vicar gave a review of the past year’s work, from which it appears regular services are held at Te Nui, Whakataki, Bush Grove, Mungapakeha Schoolroom, Whareama Schoolroom, Blairlogie, Homewood, Stansboro’ and Flat Point, and occasional services at a number of homesteads, especially during the shearing season.

The Vicar pointed out some of the difficulties in the working of a large Mission District such as this, comprising nearly a thousand square miles.

During the past year, the Bishop of Wellington visited the Wharau, Flat Point, Stansboro (where Confirmation service was held), Kummerstein, Homewood, Kohinui, and Blairlogie.

During the past year the Vicar travelled over 6,000 miles, and slept away from home 250 nights. He desires to take this opportunity of expressing his great gratitude for he unbounded hospitality and kindness he has received during the past three years, for without such hospitality it would be impossible to work this large mission single handed.

During the past year over ₤450 have been raised in the district--₤300 towards the new church, ₤10 for an organ for the Makataki, ₤7 for an organ for Mangapakeha, and the balance for general church fund and offertories ordered by Synod.

The vestry still require ₤100 if the new church in the course of erection is to be opened free of debt, and it is earnestly hoped that all who have not yet subscribed will do so at once. Subscriptions can be made payable to the Rev. J. H. Sykes, Te Nui, treasurer.

The Vicar said he specially desired to thank Mr D. Speedy for the time and labour he has given as Treasurer of the Mission during the past three years.

Mr Frank Brading was appointed Vicar’s Warden. The following Vestry was elected:—Messrs H.A. Nevins, J. Perry, F.W. Groves, D. Speedy, A. Speedy, John Groves, J. H. Tatham, Hugh Morrison, A. McHutchon, R. Langdon and Ryder.

Mr H.A. Nevins was unanimously elected Synod representative for the next three years.
