Vestry Meeting
27 September 1921
Minutes of Vestry Meeting held at the Vicarage, Tinui, on Sept 27th, 1921, 2.30 pm
Present
The Vicar & Messrs W. G. Groves, H. Bennett, T. Cripps, S. Holdsworth, A. T. Hancock, H. Ryder, H. G. Groves, H. J. Speedy, & D. H. Speedy & the Secretary Mr A. Schofield.
Apologies
Apologies for absence were received from Messrs H. B. Maunsell & G. Moore.
Telephone
Mr D.H. Speedy explained how the matter of the Telephone at the vicarage stood. Moved by Mr W. G. Groves secd by Mr H. Ryder
"that if it be possible to connect the Vicarage with the Telephone without the payment of the entrance fee that Mr Speedy be empowered to act in the matter but if the entrance fee has to be paid that the vicarage be not connected." Carried.
Building Fund (Vicarage)
Mr Maunsell's accounts before the vestry showed a balance of ₤200 still owing & cash in hand ₤23 & one promise of ₤25 yet to come. Moved by Mr H. Ryder, secd. by Mr A. T. Hancock:
that the Churchwardens be empowered to borrow a sum not exceeding ₤200 to pay the amount still due. Carried.
S. Andrew's Church
The Vicar explained what had been done to the grounds by means of the interest on the Riddiford bequest. A tender of ₤31.2.0 for painting the Church was presented by Mr J.H. Atkinson. Moved by Mr Ryder seconded by Mr A.J. Speedy:
that the tender be accepted. Carried.
Church of Good Shepherd
Mr H. G. Groves moved & Mr S. Holdsworth secd.
"that the matter of roof alterations to the Church of the Good Shepherd as in minutes of previous meeting be now held over." Carried.
Grounds
Moved Mr A.T. Hancock secd. by Mr S. Holdsworth
that Mr H. Bennett have power to act in the matter of the repairs to the Church Yard & Old Vicarage paddock fences. Carried.
Parish Finances
The interim balance sheet for the six months ending 30th Sept 1921 showed a credit balance of ₤6 in the current account. The Secretary explained that the promised donations were ₤230 & the amount of last years offertories ₤73, leaving only ₤3 for expenses above amount required for stipend. Expenses so far had been met by the credit balance that accumulated during the Vicar's absence at the war.
A letter from Mr L. Meredith was read saying he would have to reduce his subscription from ₤5 to ₤1.?.0. Moved Mr H. G. Groves Secd Mr Ryder:
that Mr Cripps & Mr Morrison interview Mr Meredith in regard to arrears.
Two other announcements of a reduction were received but arrears were paid up in full. Several names were assigned for further canvas by members of the Vestry.
The Vicar explained that the Andrews bequest was yielding ₤266 per annum & had been given for an addition to the stipend; that as announced in a parish letter he intended to devote it firstly to parish expenses, secondly to work of the Church outside the parish; further that there were already heavy travelling expenses for which he would reimburse himself.
Vicar's Accident
The Vicar explained that acting on representations made by his Warden & members of the Vestry, he had taken further advice & would be absent for October & probably November.[1]
The meeting then closed.
Banking Account
Subsequent to the above meeting individual members approved of the opening of a banking account by the Secretary at the Bank of N.Z.

[1] 10.10.1921. The Rev. D.B. Ashcroft, of Tenui, is at present in Wellington, undergoing a course of treatment, necessitated by his accident some months ago.
